WHAT IS PAT TESTING?

PAT Testing or Portable Appliance Testing is the process by which electrical appliances are checked to see if they are safe.

A Portable Appliance is simply an item of electrical equipment, which is connected to the power supply by means of a plug and socket.

Health and safety regulations state that when people work with electrical appliances, the appliance MUST be safe. To ensure continual safety testing should be carried out at regular intervals. The interval between tests depends on the type of appliance and the environment in which it is used.

WHAT'S INVOLVED?

There are two parts to Portable Appliance Testing. A formal visual inspection and if that proves to be satisfactory then electrical testing and the actual PAT Test.

The formal visual inspection is the most important component of a regular maintenance regime because the majority of potentially dangerous faults can be picked up by such inspections.
