PAT TESTING INTRODUCTION

In the United Kingdom, Portable Appliance Testing is a process by which electrical appliances are routinely checked to see if they are safe.

When people work with electrical appliances, Health and safety regulations say the appliance must be safe.

REGULAR INTERVALS

PAT Testing should be carried out at regular intervals to ensure continual safety; the interval between tests depending on both the type of appliance and the environment it is used in.

MEANING OF "PAT TESTING"

Portable Appliance Testing is abbreviated to 'PAT'. The phrase 'PAT Testing' is in fact a tautology in the same way that some people say 'LCD Display'.

However, the phrase is commonly used in the industry even though most people realise it is incorrect.

The correct term for the whole process is 'In-service Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment'.

WHY PAT TEST?

There are a number of reasons why electrical appliances should be tested on a regular basis, but the most important ones are:-

1) To comply with The Electricity at Work Regulations.

2) To comply with the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.

3) To minimise the risk of fire and injury caused by electrical appliances.

4) To satisfy your Insurance Company.

5) To comply with all Health & Safety requirements and ISO standards.

Also, one of the items Fire Officers and Health & Safety Inspectors usually to ask to see on any inspection visit are PAT records.
