Portable Appliance Testing or PAT Testing is part of your Health & Safety and involves the inspection and testing of electrical items to ensure of their safety to users.

It is a requirement for all employers or self employed, to ensure that all electrical work equipment is safe. Equipment should also only be used for the activity that it was designed to be used for and must also be properly maintained so that it is always in good condition.

There are a number of Regulations to ensure that companies, employers and the self employed abide by this legislation. Some of these are outlined below.

The UK Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) requires that:

"Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is so constructed or adopted as to be suitable for the purpose for which it is provided".

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1998 states:

"As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent so far as reasonably practicable, such danger".

All of this legislation covers everything from small hand held electrical items such as drills or hair dryers to large fixed electrical systems (see installation testing for these fixed items).

Each kind of electrical item has its own recommendations for the continuous maintenance that it should under go, and for the frequency that it should be inspected and tested.

Regular PAT Testing is an important safety requirement for any business no matter what the business activity. The IEE code of Practice has published a book out lining the requirements for in-service inspection and testing of portable and fixed electrical appliances.

The Pat testing training course is a great way to get to grips with what is required in this area.
